Our Stories

International Women's Day 2023

At Primark, we’re committed to celebrating all women, supporting and empowering them to be their best and most powerful selves. That’s why we’re proud to launch our new ‘What Power Feels Like’ campaign to mark International Women’s Day. Through this campaign, we want women to feel empowered to make fashion choices that reflect who they really are, every day.

We want to redefine power dressing and flip the idea that it’s about expensive, corporate and formal clothes on its head. We believe power dressing is for everyone and that by encouraging women to wear what they want, they can be their true, authentic selves.

We know our business plays an important role in women’s lives every day, through our products, how we support our colleagues and communities, and through initiatives within our supply chain.

While we know that we have more to do, we’re proud of our journey so far: Over the last year alone, we’ve launched new and innovative products to support women at life stages such as menopause and motherhood, as well as during challenging times like undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Most importantly, we’ve made these products accessible and affordable to as many women as possible by offering the best value on the high street.

For our colleagues, we have also launched our D&I Colleague Networks, including the Global Life Stages and Gender colleague network, to amplify voices and share insights and ideas that will help to build a more inclusive culture for everyone in Primark.

We’re proud to support women in our communities and this week we are hosting the first of a series of workshops at our Dublin Head Office with local organisation, WorkEqual, who provide innovative and targeted services and programmes to help people entering the workplace for the first time or getting back to work, to reach sustained economic independence.
At this event, colleagues from both WorkEqual and Primark will run sessions on image consulting, coaching for interviews, advice on job applications and social profile building.

We’re also committed to supporting and empowering women through initiatives within our supply chain. Our Primark Sustainable Cotton Programme (PSCP) has trained over 250,000 farmers in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, in more sustainable and regenerative farming practices, most of whom are women. Under our PSCP, the Sustainable Lives Programme also educates women in Pakistan and Bangladesh on financial literacy, decision-making and health, family planning, menstrual hygiene and women’s rights.

Women account for the majority of our global supplier factory workforce – estimated at around 320,000. Under Primark Cares, our goal is to strengthen the position of women in the garment industry through skills development and addressing barriers to progression by 2030. Sudokkho is a Primark-supported programme which encourages factories in Bangladesh to introduce an effective in-house technical training system for sewing operators, most of whom are women. Other long-standing programmes include My Life, My Space and My Journey, supporting both men and women, but aim to empower and support factory workers.
