Policies

We have a set of policies covering our standards and commitments for how we and our suppliers conduct business. They align with industry standards, laws, and regulations, and in some cases go beyond this.

Our Supplier Code of Conduct

It’s our responsibility to respect human rights and the environment in our supply chain. Our Supplier Code of Conduct is the basis of our ethical trade and environmental sustainability programme.

Our Supplier Code of Conduct covers areas of workers’ rights such as payment of wages, health and safety, freedom of association, in addition to prevention of key risks such as forced labour and discrimination. It applies to any supplier making our products.

Materials and Products

Animal-derived materials make up less than 1% of the materials used in Primark products, but we’re committed to ensuring that any that are used are responsibly sourced. We support the development of animal welfare standards and certifications, and our policy requires that our suppliers also comply with industry standards and regulations in the sourcing of our products.

We created Primark Durability Framework to support our Primark Cares commitment to strengthen the durability of our clothes by 2025. This framework is the result of cross-sector collaboration and open conversations with a range of stakeholders. As signatories to the Textiles 2030 initiative, we collaborated closely with WRAP's (Waste and Resources Action Programme) team of experts, their guidance and their Clothing Longevity Protocol served as inspiration for our work. This framework will help us progress towards increasing the durability of our clothes but also allow us to talk about the challenges and successes we face on this journey.

We are committed to the ZDHC Group’s Programme and are members of the AFIRM Group. These partnerships help us to phase out certain chemicals deemed hazardous and replace them with safer alternatives. A core part of our work towards this target is our Restricted Substances List (RSL), which combines the limits for chemicals in the materials used to make our products, and the substances in chemicals that suppliers are not permitted to use in the manufacture of Primark products and materials. Our RSL is aligned with the ZDHC Manufacturing Restricted Substances List and the AFIRM RSL. We share our RSL with all suppliers and facilities that manufacture Primark products and provide in-country supplier training on our chemical management requirements.

Our Primark Circular Product Standard is a framework for how we intend to design clothes now and in the future. It was developed in consultation with circularity think tank Circle Economy and the non-profit sustainability educator Sustainable Fashion Academy. The framework is built on the vision for a circular economy for fashion by our partner Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a global thought leader on the circular economy, and in consultation with climate action NGO WRAP.

The standard is used by our Product Teams and our suppliers to support our Primark Cares commitment to make clothes that are recyclable by design by 2027.

Our Wood and Wood-Derived Fibre Policy outlines our commitment to protect the world’s ancient and endangered forests by applying circular design principles, procuring responsibly, and prioritising Next Generation Solutions in the future.

Partner Agreements

We believe collaboration is the most effective way to drive improvements across our textile industry. That’s why we work in partnership with global and local experts as well as other brands and retailers on a number of programmes designed to make improvements in our supply chain.

Since 2015, we’ve been a member of Action, Collaboration, Transformation (ACT). ACT is a ground-breaking agreement between trade unions, global brands and retailers in pursuit of living wages for workers in textile and garment supply chains. The Memorandum of Understanding – signed between companies (including Primark) and IndustriALL (global Trade Union) – is the basis for the cooperation between ACT members, outlining the commitments necessary to establish freedom of association, collective bargaining and living wages within global supply chains.

We’re committed to working with industry and other stakeholders to phase out specific chemical groups from the textile and apparel supply chain to achieve the goal of ‘zero discharge’ by 2020. This is set out in our Detox Commitment, agreed in conjunction with the global NGO Greenpeace. This has been in place since 2014.

In 2015 we signed the Cotton Pledge, committing to not knowingly source Uzbek cotton for the manufacturing of any of our products until the Government of Uzbekistan ends the practice of forced child and adult labour in its cotton sector. We extended this ban to Turkmenistan in 2016.

The ZDHC Foundation, a global multi-stakeholder initiative involving over 160 fashion and footwear industry contributors, oversees the implementation of the Roadmap to Zero Programme. The Roadmap to Zero Programme is a collaborative initiative that works to eliminate hazardous chemicals from the global fashion industry. As part of that aim, ZDHC has established Wastewater Guidelines as an aligned expectation on wastewater quality for the entire textile and footwear industry. These guidelines go beyond regulatory compliance to ensure wastewater discharge does not adversely affect the environment and surrounding communities.

As a member of ZDHC, we have adopted the ZDHC Wastewater Guidelines and ask our suppliers to use these parameters which go beyond regulatory compliance for wastewater discharge.
