Primark, the international fashion retailer, has today bolstered its commitment to Spain by announcing a capital investment of €100 million in its Spanish business. The investment includes €80 million in eight new stores and one store extension and €20 million investment in upgrades and refurbishments in stores. Over 1,000 jobs will be created over the next two years as part of the company’s ambitious growth plans in the market.

Primark opened its first store in Spain 16 years ago in May 2006, in Plenilunio, Madrid and today has 56 stores across the country. As part of its commitment to invest in its store portfolio, Primark will bring its quality fashion and essentials at the best value prices to three brand-new locations in the next 12 months, including its first store in Lanzarote, its first store in Melilla and its first store in Toledo.

Over the course of the next two years, the retailer will also open stores in Jaén and Lorca as well as a further three new stores in the Comunidad of Madrid. Madrid is already home to eight Primark stores including the retailer’s flagship 135,000 sq ft store located in one of the most iconic buildings on Gran Via alongside Primark’s Spanish headquarters. The Primark store in Diagonal Mar in Barcelona will also be redeveloped and extended, creating an enhanced shopping experience for customers.

Primark Spain continues to invest in its people and will increase its total workforce by over 11% over the next two years with these new stores. The expansion will create over 1,000 new job opportunities across Spain, bringing the total workforce to 10,000. New roles include a mix of full and part-time opportunities for retail assistants, trainee managers and department managers.

As part of Primark’s commitment to create a great in-store experience for everyone, it will refurbish and upgrade some of its stores. This work will include improving and updating décor and fixtures within stores. The continued roll-out of LED lighting across its Spanish store portfolio is also included, as Primark progresses its ambition to halve its carbon footprint across its value chain by 2030.

Designed to complement the Primark offer in-store, Primark plans to continue to grow its successful partnerships and collaborations in the coming year with a focus on partnering with local Spanish companies. This year Primark opened a natural frozen yogurt concession ‘Llaollao’ in its Marbella store as well as a Granier café in its Seville store. Primark Granada and Palma have a seasonal offering of ‘Llaollao in store during the summer months.

Carlos Inacio, Director General of Primark Spain said: “Spain is Primark’s second biggest market with 56 stores across the country. Today we are proud to announce a significant investment in our store portfolio and long-term growth of Primark Spain. This exciting expansion plan will create employment, positively impact the local communities we are opening in and bring Primark stores closer to our customers across Spain. We are very grateful for our loyal customers in Spain who have supported us since we opened our first store 17 years ago. We know they love our offering of the best value fashion, beauty and homeware coupled with an amazing in-store experience and we look forward to bringing them more opportunities to shop with us in the coming years.”

This announcement follows the opening of three new stores in Spain in the last 12 months, in San Sebastian, San Fernando and Girona. As part of its ambitious international growth plans, Primark expects to add a net one million sq ft of retail selling space this financial year with the vast majority of new stores in its growth markets of Spain, France, Italy and the US. Currently at 409 stores, Primark aims to reach 530 stores by the end of 2026, including 60 stores in the US and will open in new markets Romania and Slovakia.

Last week the retailer announced an investment of £140 million into new and existing UK stores and yesterday it announced it would invest €100 million in its French business.
