Major investment combines new store openings and upgrades across Iberia.
In Spain, where Primark celebrates its 20th anniversary, €40 million will fund the refurbishment of eleven locations and a new store in Talavera de la Reina.
Expansion across both countries will create over 300 new retail jobs.
Primark, the international fashion retailer, has today announced a major investment of over €85 million across Spain and Portugal, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the region. Through a programme of new openings and store upgrades, Primark will continue to create fantastic retail destinations, where customers can enjoy the best of fashion, beauty, homeware and everyday essentials, all at affordable prices.
2026 marks 20 years since Primark opened its first store in Spain, in Plenilunio, Madrid. Over the past two decades, the retailer has built a strong presence, growing to 67 stores and becoming a familiar destination in major shopping centres and high streets across the country. Having established this nationwide footprint and built strong relationships with local communities and customers, Primark is now focused on re-investing and enhancing its existing estate to meet evolving customer expectations.
Celebrating this milestone, Primark is investing €40 million in new and existing stores, ensuring that customers can continue to enjoy an exceptional shopping experience. Eleven stores across the country are being refurbished and upgraded, including: in Albacete, Algeciras, Cornellà, Fuengirola, Pamplona, Roquetas de Mar, Santander, Vitoria, Zaragoza, Cartagena and Santiago de Compostela. The retailer has also announced the opening of new store in Talavera de la Reina (Toledo), which will open in the coming months at the Los Alfares Shopping Centre, and will mark Primark’s 68th in Spain and second in the province of Toledo.
The eleven refurbishments reflect Primark’s strategy of reinvesting in its stores to deliver best in-store experience for customers. Improvements will include enhanced layouts, refreshed decor, and a modern design in line with the latest store concept, as well as the introduction of self-service checkouts.
In Portugal, the retailer will invest €45 million to open four new stores in Porto, GAIA, Castelo Branco, and Setúbal, alongside the extension of its popular Forum Coimbra store. The investment marks continued growth in a market where the brand has been building its presence for the past 17 years and has developed a strong customer base drawn to its mix of everyday essentials and on-trend fashion. A highlight will be Primark’s first high street store in Portugal, located in the iconic Palladium building on Rua de Santa Catarina, Porto’s main shopping street.
Carlos Inácio, Director of Sales of Primark Iberia, said: “This is a landmark moment for Primark in Iberia: This investment reflects our confidence in the region and our long-term commitment to both Spain and Portugal. In Spain, as we celebrate 20 years since our first store, we’re proud of the connection we’ve built with our customers and communities. Our focus now is on investing in our existing stores to ensure we continue to deliver an exceptional shopping experience for many years to come. In Portugal, where the brand continues to grow in popularity, we are building on recent momentum by expanding our footprint and reaching new locations.”
Every new store brings employment opportunities to the local community, and this investment will create over 300 new roles across Iberia. The majority of these roles will support new store openings and will include a mix of full and part-time roles for retail assistants and managerial positions. Interested candidates can apply through the Primark careers website.
This announcement builds on Primark’s ongoing growth across Iberia. In 2022, the company announced a €100 million investment in Spain, covering eight new stores, one extension, and upgrades to existing locations. In Portugal, a €40 million investment was announced in 2024, including four new stores and extension. Since these announcements, Primark has opened even more stores and completed additional refurbishments, further strengthening its presence ahead of the store openings over the next year.
